Sunday 22nd February – Draycote Water 35 Mile Race
Carnegie ladies win team title at Draycote Water 35
The opening ultra event of 2009 took place at the Draycote Water 35 organised by Kennilworth Runners. Six Harriers made the long trip South to take part and were rewarded with some excellent individual and team performances. Richie Cunningham was the leading Carnegie athlete completing the 35 mile race in 4.21.02 in 7th position. Reigning Scottish 100K Champion Gail Murdoch placed 4th lady (16th overall) in 4.35.46 leading the Carnegie ladies team to success with Pauline Walker finishing 6th lady in 4.51.46 and Lynne Kuz, 7th lady in 4.55.15. Taking part in his first ultra event Ryan McKenzie placed 59th in 5.54.37 and Fiona Rennie was 60th in 5.55.13.
Saturday 28th February – Cupar 5 Mile Road Race
Cupar 5 success for David Simpson
Congratulations to Carnegie’s David Simpson who won Saturday’s Cupar 5 in a personal best of 25.24. David led home the field of 199 runners in a new Carnegie Harriers 5 mile club record lowering his previous best set at the 2008 Brig Bash ’5′ by one second. Scott Bradley placed 9th overall in 27.28 having ran 15 miles to get to Cupar prior to the race! Callan Francis was the leading U17 athlete setting a personal best of 29.33 finishing 30th overall while Ian Johnston placed 32nd in 29.43. Sid James broke the 30 minute barrier for the first time setting a personal best of 29.58 in 37th position. Matt Meade enjoyed a solid run clocking 30.47 in 43rd place while David Greig timed at 33.24 in 80th position. Tom Spry placed 95th in 33.54 while Lynne Bennet had a strong run finishing 125th in 35.51, Alasdair McKinnon was 134th in 36.35 and Marianne Crichton was 149th in 39.10.
Sunday 1st March – Smokies 10 Mile Race, Arbroath
Thirteen Carnegie ladies complete the Smokies 10 Miler
The annual ladies only Arbroath Smokies 10 Mile Road Race witnessed a number of excellent performances from the thirteen Carnegie ladies taking part. In form Fabienne Thompson placed a superb 4th overall in 1.08.52 and was closely followed by Gail Murdoch (6th in 1.10.14) and Pauline Walker (7th and 1st FSV in 1.10.51) resulting in Carnegie ladies winning the coveted team award. Lynne Kuz was the next Harrier to finish placing 13th in 1.14.01 while Helena Sim finished 14th in 1.14.24 and Susan Cederstrom was 15th in 1.15.11. Catherine Wilson ran well placing 74th in 1.24.54 and there were personal bests for Nicola Dunn (1.33.19) and Mehrnaz Campbell (1.43.28). All the Carnegie results are now on-line and well done as always to Arbroath Footers for staging this popular event.
Sunday 1st March – Lasswade 10 Mile Road Race
Five Harriers travelled across to Rosewell to contest the Lasswade 10 Mile Race.  Kevin Mathie placed 40th from the 406 finishers in 1.05.46 followed by Frazer Munro, placing 111th in 1.11.26.  Ian McKinnell enjoyed a solid run around the undulating course finishing 127th in 1.12.57 while Bill Duff clocked 1.18.12 in 191st position and Ken Daniels placed 251st in 1.23.22.
Sunday 1st March – Bishop Hill Race, Scotlandwell
Carnegie ladies win team award at Bishop Hill Race
There was a good showing of Carnegie runners at Sunday’s Bishop Hill Race which incorporated the 2nd counting event in our 2009 Hill Running Grand Prix. If you fancy a race this weekend then there are several to choose from;

On Saturday, Fife AC host the popular Cupar 5 Mile Road Race.  The race starts at 3pm with all entries (£5/£7) from 1pm onwards at the YMCA Hall, Bonnygate, Cupar. An accurately measured fast out and back course on quiet country roads. The course is suitable for setting a personal best. Please allow sufficient time to reach the race start on St. Mary’s Road which is approximately half a mile from the YMCA. Please note there are no showering facilities at the hall. After the race all runners will be provided with a free traditional Fife AC post-race tea.

An excellent field of 70 runners assembled in Tillicoultry for the inaugural Law Breaker Hill Race which featured a 5.3k race from Tillicoultry Glen to the 1800ft summit of The Law in the Ochil Hills and back. From the gun, 17 year old Robbie Simpson (Banchory Stonehaven AC) forced the pace, reaching the summit in 22.27 followed by Clydesdale Harrier Prasad Prasad (22.50) and Alasdair Anthony (Ochil Hill Runners) who was 23.20 at halfway. In the ladies race, Fiona Maxwell (Mourne Runners) reached the summit in 6th place overall in a fast 26.47. On the steep descent, Robbie Simpson increased his lead reaching the finish in 32.51 followed by Ochil’s Alasdair Anthony who placed 2nd in 33.46 and Clydesdale’s Prasad Prasad who was 3rd in 34.48. Brian Marshall (HELP) placed 4th in 35.24 and Dan Gay (HBT) was 5th in 37.05.Fiona Maxwell won the ladies race (12th overall) in 40.13 ahead of 2nd placed Claire Gordon (HBT) who clocked 45.56 and 3rd placed Angela Martin (Unatt) who timed at 53.45.  Deeside’s Alan Smith was the leading M40 in 38.04 (7th overall) and Bill Maxwell (Mourne Runners) the leading M50 in 41.45. Carnegie’s Susan Cederstrom won the F40 award in 59.56. Ochil Hill Runners were the leading team with 45 points with Carnegie Harriers placing 2nd team with 48 points.

Well done to Richie Cunningham who completed the 166k, 9000m Ultra Tour Du Mont Blanc at the weekend.

Graham Clark Memorial Road Race – Thursday 21st August at 7.30pm
Our 3.9 mile Graham Clark Memorial Road Race takes place on Thursday evening (7.30pm) at Knockhll Racing Circuit near Dunfermline. We are hoping for a good turnout and all entries (£4 / £6) will be taken on the night from 6pm within the cafeteria at Knockhill.
