20 Carnegie men and 7 Carnegie ladies travelled to Strathallan School to compete in the 12th edition of the 5 mile Road Race, the 6th counting event in the 2011 Road Running Grand Prix Championships.

The growing success of the race was evident: the100 limit was reached 2 weeks prior to the race, to then be increased by another 20 runners who entered in the following 6 days.

The cool and breezy air and the cloudy skies were a runner’s dream and a certain number of Personal Bests were recorded. Spectators may have been hoping for a warmer June day, but they still turned up en mass and gave the athletes plenty of vocal attention. Amateur photographers found enough scenic backgrounds for their action shots as Perthshire’s rhododendrons, old trees and shrubs were offering the perfect rural setting for this 2 lap course of undulating tarmac. The Strathallan Prefects discovered another aspect of their school duty as they mastered the art of marshalling with good humour and efficiency.

In addition to the official race report, the following is worth mentioning: double amputee and kidney transplant Ronnie McIntosh of Dundee Hawkhill came to test his fitness and skills on this challenging course and walk raced a full lap of the euphemism: undulations. That takes some guts!

The post-race buffet rose to its reputation and offered a mouth-watering spectrum of home made cakes, biscuits, sandwiches and various savouries (including the home made and incredibly tasty Cornish Pasty) all kindly provided by Members of Carnegie Harriers.

Faithful to our sporting gathering, Adrian Stott of Run & Become donated Prize vouchers and Martin Jeffers of Tiso, Perth, provided us with goody bags as spot prizes. Our thanks go to both suppliers, to all Club members who contributed to the food buffet, collected sponsorship, donated money and helped with the overall organisation. Thanks to everyone’s effort the 3 charities: Cancer Research, C.H.A.S. and Get Kids Going! will EACH receive a cheque for £250.

Strathallan success for Mike Carroll and Gillian Carr
The 11th edition of the Strathallan 5 mile Road Race saw 99 entries and 82 finishers. Many Club members were tackling the undulating and scenic course for the first time and swore to return. The air was warm but a most welcome breeze was there to cool down the athletes in their effort. The numerous spectators were certainly in favour of such a clement weather.Mike Carroll of Perth Road Runners excelled and won the race in 26.12. Carnegie’s Scott Bradley came a strong second overall in 27.33 and club mate Tommy Lawrence finished a close third in 27.47. The first three ladies finished inside the same minute with Corstorphine’s Gillian Carr winning in 32.02. Judith Turner in Carnegie colours secured the second place in 32.20 and Siobhan Culleton, who joined Carnegie after an impressive 4th place at last Wednesday’s Auld Toun 10K, finished third in 32.38.

Carnegie Harriers did not fail to feature in the category prize list with Iain Taylor (4th overall) winning the M40 award in 29.19. Bryce Aitken representing Fife AC finished 1st M50 in 30.12 and Robin Scott (unattached) was first M60 in 33.31. Gail Murdoch was the leading F40 in a time of 34.02 and Carnegie team mate Isobel Burnett’s strong run gained her the F50 award as she completed the course in 35.34. Sheila Bauchop (Scottish Veteran Harriers) won the F60 award in a time of 42.00. Congratulations to Scott Smith (unattached) who was the winning U20 runner in 36.04.

Once again the food buffet look magnificent as many athletes and spouses had been busy baking or purchasing what we all crave for at the end of a hard run. John Fulham’s watermelon went down treat on such a warm summer’s evening and everyone found something to satisfy taste buds and appetite. I am very grateful to everyone’s baking talent and generosity of food and/or donation. Run & Become of Edinburgh have also contributed to the success of this fund raising event by donating the shop vouchers as prizes. Last year a total of £870 was raised for C.H.A.S., Cancer Research and Get Kids Going!. I anticipate that a similar amount will have been raised on Saturday.

Many thanks to everyone who took part and assisted with the race organisation who made the event another great success.
