Fine, dry, sunny and almost windless conditions greeted the 43 starters for the postponed Festive Forest race on Saturday 26th February. Ground conditions were reasonable, with some parts of the course perfectly dry and sound, and others heavily waterlogged and muddy. The route was clear and straightforward, with some surprising new vistas owing to forestry work since the last running. On reaching the top of the course, runners who had the time for such things were treated to a spectacular view of Benarty Hill and the western ridge of West Lomond above Scotlandwell.

A hard-fought contest had been expected, and this is exactly what happened, with Tommy Lawrence, hot-foot from his usual Saturday morning exercise class, taking the prize in 41.20 and prevailing over Graeme Campbell and Peter Humphreys. With two M40′s already in the prizes, 1st M40 went to 4th placed Mike Harvey, with 6th placed Ian Johnston as 1st M50. The M60s were out in force, too, with Iain Thomson narrowly defeating four of his age-group to the 1st M60 place.

Among the ladies, Fabienne Thompson, safely returned from France, took the honours as 1st lady in 11th place overall, in a very creditable 51.17, outpacing her younger rivals Grace MacKenzie and Kirsty Baird. Linda James took 1st F40 in 26th place overall.

Finishing duties were admirably carried out by Val Macaulay, Melanie Sinclair and Peter Morrison – thanks to all of them for their support and professionalism. Thanks are due also to Sue Walker for the excellent and very welcome punch, the recipe and ingredients for which were delivered to Morna as Sue could not attend.

Thanks to all those who ran, all supporters in whatever capacity, and to the capricious weather which this time smiled on us!

The 10th edition of the Tour of Fife was a resounding success and well done to Fife AC’s Brian Cruickshank and his team for staging this epic event of races. This year’s tour which was sponsored again by John R.Weir saw 133 runners complete the six stages over seven days. The event which began last Sunday afternoon at Giffordtown saw the ‘tourists’ run 27 miles over varying terrain finishing with the 5.6 mile ‘Twisted’ Chicken Run from Strathmiglo. The competition is intense, the cameraderie is outstanding and everyone is a winner. Twenty members of Carnegie Harriers completed this year’s ‘Tour’ and loads of excellent race photo’s can be found on the Fife AC website and at roadrunpics.com at http://www.roadrunpics.com/

Judy Turner completed the Ythan challenge which is a multi-terrain adventure race measuring approximately 11k, which starts and finishes at the Meadows Sports Centre in Ellon, north of Aberdeen. The course takes runners along a largely flat off-road path beside the river Ythan and onto the Esslemont Estate, which is usually closed to the public. Once on the estate, the going gets tougher underfoot and you can expect a few surprises as the course includes a series of obstacles — including the now famous (or possibly infamous!) straw bales, killer hills, cargo nets and some waist deep mud thrown in for good measure. A few runners sacrificed their trainers to the mud in the process! Judy came second female with a time of 56.31. Would be good to get a few more harriers up there next year as it’s fantastic fun and they even put a good BBQ on after.

1st, 2nd and 3rd for Carnegie at Cateran Trail Race

The annual Cateran Trail Individual and Relay Races took place on Saturday morning from Blairgowrie finishing some 23 miles later at the Spittal of Glenshee. Helena Sim placed 2nd F40 in 4.28.32.

Carnegie Harriers fielded three teams in the relay race with our men’s team finishing 4th team overall (3.17.29) and winning the 1st male senior team award. The opening stage from Blairgowrie to Bridge of Cally was undertook by Paul Arnott and David Greig with Andy Sim and Bernt Cederstrom running stage two from Bridge of Cally to Kirkmichael. The final stage to the Spittal of Glenshee was ran by Peter Humphreys and Steven King who along with their team mates ensured that Carnegie’s success over the years at the Cateran Trail Relay Race continued in 2009.

Carnegie’s ladies placed 3rd senior female team overall in 4.59.52 with Catherine Wilson and Gillian McKracken putting in a strong effort on stage one. Susan Cederstrom and Isobel Burnett had a slight adventure on stage two where they missed a turning resulting in them losing a lot of time by going off course. Thankfully they both retraced their steps back to where they had went wrong and safely reached the end of their stage in Kirkmichael. Alison Whyte and Fabienne Thompson were in superb form over the anchor leg and brought our ladies home in 3rd spot.

C arnegie’s mixed team also performed well placing 7th team overall in 3.51.56. Lesley Halstead and Clive Cable put in solid runs on the opening stage followed by Phil Smithard and Allan Macaulay who ran well over stage two. Robert Milton and Iain Taylor had strong runs on Stage 3 bringing the mixed team home in under four hours.

The event, which is advertised as a “10K-and a bit” actually measures 10.7 miles. It is a trubo-charged roller coaster of a run, taking you off-road most of the time, under and over a series of exciting obstacles, crossing freezing rivers, walking across slippery beams, up vertical hills, leopard crawling under nets, scrambling up a scree, across pitch black tunnel with near freezing sewage smelling water up to your waist. Ahead of 833 finishers (a real mix of tweed and lycra-clad athletes) Andy ran 14 minute faster than last year, this time making use of the key item: a headtorch.

This unique race involves the runners completing three complete laps of the racing circuit. There will be a post-race buffet and awards will be presented in all categories.

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday at Knockhill. The race is also a counter in our RR Grand Prix.

Could club members please if possible bring along some sandwiches / cakes etc to ensure that the post race buffet is a success.
