Carnegie Harriers enjoyed a successful day at Saturday’s National Six Stage Road Relays in Livingston. The Championship event saw Carnegie’s Masters team win the Gold medals after a very strong team performance around the 27 mile route. Carnegie’s senior ‘A’ team placed 16th overall and the club’s senior ‘B’ team were 45th overall.
Ian Stewart undertook the 3.15 opening stage for the Carnegie Masters (aged 40 and over) team covering the undulating route in 17.26 placing 20th overall and 2nd in the Masters race. Lewis Lawson kept the Harriers in 2nd Masters team position on Stage 2 clocking 33.25 for the 5.85 mile leg. Ian Johnston timed at 19.03 on Stage 3 (3.15 miles) as Carnegie remained in 2nd place behind Ron Hill Cambuslang in the Masters Championship race.
In form Allan Fotheringham clocked an impressive 32.40 on Stage 4 (5.85 miles) while Stevie Ogg on Stage 5 (3.15 miles) timed at 18.20. Moving onto the final stage, Ron Hill Cambuslang were still in pole position in the Masters race but a steady run from Iain Taylor saw Carnegie move into the lead over the last few miles. Iain clocked 34.03 for Stage 6 (5.85 miles) as Carnegie Harriers placed 11th team overall and leading Masters team in 2.34.57.
Ron Hill Cambuslang won the silver medals in the Masters Championship in 2.35.47 and Calderglen Harriers took the bronze medals in 2.43.26.
Calum McGaw clocked 18.01 (27th) on Stage 1 followed by Roger Clark timing at 33.47 (28th) on Stage 2. Alex Keenan on his return from injury covered the 3.15 mile third stage in 18.11 (22nd) before Campbell Hutt moved the team into 20th position over Stage 4 posting a time of 34.41. Steven King enjoyed a strong run (18.27) on Stage 5 moving Carnegie into 16th position and Andrew Smith brought the team home in 16th place overall covering his 5.85 miles in 34.21.
Carnegie’s senior ‘B’ team performed well finishing 45th team overall in 3.00.47. Mark Johnstone led the team off clocking 21.32 (55th) on Stage 1 before handing over to Pete Simpson who timed at 36.36 (47th) on Stage 2. Stephen Greer covered Stage 3 in 21.44 (50th) and Bernt Cederstrom reached the end of Stage 4 in 39.16 (45th). Kieran Morgan on the penultimate stage clocked 21.52 (44th) and Malcolm Smith brought the senior ‘B’ team ome in 39.47 (45th).
Earlier in 2010, Carnegie enjoyed Gold medal success at the National Cross Country Relays in Cumbernauld along with the Scottish Veteran Harriers 4 Stage Road Relays at Strathclyde Park.

Saturday 27th March - Edinburgh parkrun 5K, Cramond 218 runners complete the 23rd Edinburgh parkrun
Nine members of Carnegie Harriers were amongst a huge field of 218 runners taking part in Saturday’s Edinburgh parkrun along Silverknowes Promenade. The sun was shining but a strong headwind on the return section of the out and back 5k course put a halt to fast times being recorded this week. Iain Taylor contesting his 14th parkrun finished 3rd overall in 17.27 followed home by 9th placed Ian Johnston (18.49) and 25th placed Ross Carrie (19.54). Isobel Burnett in her 2nd parkrun finished 10th lady (1st F50) and 50th overall in 21.34. Gordon Somerville timed at 22.16 (63rd), Paul Arnott clocked 22.31 (68th) while Val Macaulay ran her parkrun best to date finishing in 26.10 (127th) with Pauline Walker doing pacemaking duties and finishing 128th in 26.11. Tom Maley on his 8th visit to the Edinburgh parkrun placed 194th in 32.47.
Saturday 27th March – White Caterthun Half Marathon, Brechin Frazer Munro placed a superb 6th overall and 2nd M40 at the White Caterthun Half Marathon from Brechin in 1.33.20. This tough 13.1 miler includes a 900ft climb over the White Caterthun itself.
Sunday 28th March – Round the Houses 10K Road Race, Grangemouth Strong run by Scott Bradley at the Round the Houses 10K
Carnegie’s Scott Bradley posted a fast 34.16, placing 27th in a high class field of runners at Sunday’s Round the Houses 10K Road Race in Grangemouth. The popular 10K attracted over 600 athletes and incorporated the opening event in the Stewarts Road Race Grand Prix along with the Scottish University 10K Championships. Allan Fotheringham battled hard against the strong wind to complete the 6.2 mile course in 35.38 (43rd) and Roger Clark ran well placing 47th in 35.52. Gail Murdoch finished 2nd F40 (139th overall) in 41.59, Kieran Morgan was 171st in 43.09 and Scott Dowell making his club debut in his first ever 10K race finished 10th junior (225th overall) in 45.35. Pamela Gilfillan also made her Carnegie debut reaching the finish at Grangemouth Stadium in 47.01 (275th overall).

Sunday 28th March – Stirling Duathlon Derek Cassells took part in the Stirling Duathlon on Sunday morning covering the 10K Run, 25 mile cycle, 5K Run in 2.19.15 placing 132nd overall.

Carnegie Harriers were very well represented by 32 club members at Sunday’s Alloa Half Marathon which was run in good conditions on Sunday morning. The event attraced a field of 977 runners with many Harriers recording personal bests. Scott Bradley who had only arrived back from Tokyo a few hours before the race must have still be in flight mode as he flew round the course in an impressive 1.14.31 placing 9th overall. Alloa based member Ian Stewart clocked 1.17.32 finishing 19th overall, leading M50 and 1st local runner while Campbell Hutt recorded a personal best of 1.17.39 in 22nd position. Steven King enjoyed a strong run timing at 1.23.15 (60th). Gail Murdoch was in top form covering the 13.1 mile course in 1.29.45 and placing 1st F40. John Fulham recorded a PB of 1.32.17 (194th), Tom Spry was 2nd M60 in 1.32.44 and Darren Neilson clocked 1.35.51 (266th). London Marathon bound Kirsty Baird ran her debut half marathon in 1.36.05, Malcolm Smith made his debut in 1.36.22, Gordon Rae timed at 1.40.03 and Annette Bunyan clocked 1.40.34.Ken Daniels was the leading M70 in a superb 1.48.48, Louise Dallas timed at 1.54.11 and Mhairi MacKechnie reached the finish in 1.56.45. There were many more good runs and personal best from our members and all the Carnegie results are now posted on the results section of our website and very well done to everyone who took part. The Alloa Half Marathon was also the 2nd counting event in our Road Running Grand Prix and the latest tables have now been updated.

At Saturday’s Edinburgh parkrun 5k there were six Carnegie members taking part. Campbell Hutt finished 6th overall in 17.47 while Ross Carrie ran his fastest parkrun to date clocking 19.40 (28th). Kieran Morgan contesting his 14th 5k along Silverknowes promenade reached the finish in 20.16 (40th) and Morna Fleming was the leading F50 timing at 22.33 (72nd overall). Alison West finished 2nd F50 in 23.18 (81st) and Tom Maley was 7th in 30.03.
Sunday 14th March – Inverness Half Marathon The annual Inverness Half Marathon took place on Sunday afternoon attracting a field of over one thousand runners to the highland capital. Linda James was Carnegie’s only representative at the event, completing the 13.1 race in a personal best of 1.37.48 placing 28th lady and 6th in her age category.
Sunday 14th March – Gartmorn 6 At the Gartmorn Six multi-terrain race near Sauchie, Nick Weir clocked 38.11 placing an excellent 8th overall. Kieran Morgan completed the testing course in 42.48 placing 32nd, Phil Smithard was 47th in 45.20 and Mhairi MacKechnie ran 51.49 placing 83rd. There were 132 finishers

Saturday 6th March – Birnam Hill Classic, Dunkeld On Saturday at the Birnam Hill Classic from Dunkeld, Fabienne was 4th lady in 43.49 and Alison West was the leading F50.
Saturday 6th March – Glasgow to Edinburgh Double Marathon Gail and Sue race from Glasgow to Edinburgh
Carnegie’s Gail Murdoch and Sue Walker completed the Glasgow – Edinburgh Double Marathon on Saturday. The gruelling event started in Ruchill Park, Glasgow and followed a course along the Forth & Clyde and Union canals before leading the competitors to the finish some 56 miles later at Edinburgh Quay. Gail finished an impressive 4th lady overall in 7.58.46 and Sue reached the finish very strongly in 11.03.00.
Saturday 6th March - Edinburgh parkrun 5K, Cramond Fast times recorded at the 20th Edinburgh parkrun
The Edinburgh parkrun launched 20 weeks ago and has already established itself as one of the most popular events for our club members. Saturday’s run was no exception with eleven Harriers making the short trip across the Forth to take part. Ian Stewart contesting his 2nd parkrun was rewarded with 3rd place (1st M50) in a fast time of 16.38. Calum McGaw made his debut run clocking an excellent 17.14 placing 7th overall and Ian Johnston on his 5th visit clocked 18.11 finishing 17th. Fourteen year old Fergus McGaw covered the fast and flat 5k course in 18.56 placing 22nd. Ross Carrie ran a new parkrun PB of 19.50 (46th) while Kieran Morgan set a personal best of 19.52 in 48th position. David Greig made the best use of the ideal running conditions recording a PB of 20.14 (54th) and Stephen Greer timed at 20.43 in 61st place. Phil Smithard took part in his first parkrun finishing 68th and leading M60 in 21.25, John Milton was 116th in 24.24 and Tom Maley in his 5th parkrun was 182nd in 29.46. There were 205 finishers.
Sunday 7th March – Bishop Hill Race Hill Running Grand Prix get underway at Scotlandwell
The annual Bishop Hill Race took place on Sunday afternoon with the sixty seven runners facing slushy snow on the upper slopes of the 2.5 mile race which has 1000 feet of climbing. As always there was a good Carnegie representation at this event with fourteen Harriers taking part. Sandy Bennet led the way for Carnegie placing 5th overall in 21.45, followed seven seconds later by 6th placed Peter Simpson who won the M50 award in 21.52. Richie Cunningham secured 10th place in 23.30 to ensure 2nd team spot for Carnegie with 21 points. Steven King finished 16th in 23.47, Derek Cassells was 18th in 24.35 while Stephen Greer enjoyed a fine run placing 32nd in 27.30. London Marathon bound Colin Reynolds covered the steep ascent and descent in 28.08 (35th), Neil Campbell was 36th in 28.11, Paul Hutton was 39th in 28.41 and Chris Davidson posted a time of 28.46 finishing 42nd. Regular hill runner Allan Macaulay placed 47th in 29.16, Kieran Morgan was 49th in 29.48, Phil Smithard was 66th in 38.55 while Bill Fairley made his Carnegie debut placing 67th in 43.42. The Grand Prix table has been updated and the 2nd event will take place on Saturday 20th March at the Chapelgill Hill Race.
Sunday 7th March -Arbroath Smokies 10 Mile Road Race Team success at the Arbroath Smokies Ten Miler
Eleven Carnegie ladies were amongst a field of over 300 runners at the popular Arbroath Smokies Ten Mile Road Race on Sunday morning. Judy Turner was in fine form placing 5th overall in 1.08.19 and followed home by Isobel Burnett (8th in 1.10.14) and Pauline Walker (10th in 1.01.51) ensured team success for our ladies. Annette Bunyan who is training for the Edinburgh Marathon in May had a great race placing 17th in 1.12.59 while Helena Sim clocked 1.15.23 finishing 25th. Morna Fleming reached the finish in a new PB of 1.18.03 (36th and 2nd F55), Lesley Halstead removed over ten minutes from her previous best ten miler clocking 1.21.32 (55th) and Gillian McCracken was 72nd in 1.24.18. Carnegie’s Club President Val Macaulay recorded a time of 1.30.41 (127th), Catherine Wilson was 136th in 1.31.10 and Fiona Rennie was 157th in 1.32.52.
Sunday 7th March – Lasswade 10 Mile Road Race
The Lasswade 10 Mile Race also took place on Sunday afternoon with a eight Harriers taking part in a field of over 300 runners. Frazer Munro recorded a personal best of 1.08.28 placing 73rd, Ian McKinnell clocked 1.12.32 (106th), Bill Duff was 134th in 1.14.47 and Allan Brannigan was 147th in 1.16.07. New club member Derek Carswell made his Carnegie debut covering the undulating ten mile course from Rosewell in 1.23.40 (224th). Ken Daniels was one of the leading M70 runners clocking 1.27.59 (264th), John Milton was 291st in 1.32.18 and John McArthur was 311th in 1.36.46.Busy
