NEWS
EDINBURGH FORTHSIDE HALF MARATHON – ASSISTANCE REQUIRED
The 2nd Edinburgh Forthside Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 1st April from Ocean Terminal in Leith. Last year, fifteen of our club members marshalled a section of the route in the Cramond / Silverknowes area which is about the halfway point on the course. The race organisers have contacted us enquiring if we will be able to provide assistance again this year. The race starts at 9am and assistance would be required from about 8am to 10.30am unless the last runners pass. All helpers will receive a goody bag and possibly a few other bits and bobs. If you are willing to help out could you please email Iain Taylor at carnegie.harriers@virgin.net who will co-ordinate the Carnegie marshalling team. Several of our club members have entered the race and I’m sure they would appreciate our support. At the moment eight members have volunteered to assist and further volunteers would be appreciated.
AWARDS EVENING
The presentation of annual awards for our Cross Country Grand Prix and All Rounder Competition will take place this Sunday (25th March) at 7.30pm within the Dunkeld Suite at the King Malcolm Hotel, Dunfermline. RACE ROUND-UP
Saturday 17th March – Chapelgill Hill Race, Glenholm.
Dougie McGarry was the leading Carnegie runner at the Chapelgill Hill Race, covering the 1400 ft race in 26.59 placing 23rd. Jim Lang finished 34th in 32.14 and Stephen Greer was 36th in 32.29.
Sunday 18th March – Alloa Half Marathon
The weather conditions were horrendous for Sunday’s Alloa Half Marathon with driving rain and hailstones complete with a bitterly cold wind which the runners faced along the hillfoots. The conditions severely affected everyone’s race times but nevertheless there were some excellent performances. There was a large turnout of Carnegie runners amongst the thousand runners taking part and we are still awaiting the official results. The following Harriers who record their times on the Fetcheveryone website all took part in the races; Duncan McGougan ran a very strong race to cross the line in 1.18.18 placing in the top fifteen overall. Jamie Philip clocked 1.24.01 while Kate McKinnon’s winter of hard training paid dividends as she recorded a personal best of 1.28.10 despite the adverse conditions. Colin Reynolds had a solid perfomance timing at 1.34.53 and Alisdair McKinnon knocked four minutes from his previous best finishing in 1.36.30. Hopefully all the results will be available soon and the Carnegie results will be posted on our club website and the RR Grand Prix updated.

Saturday 31st March / Sunday 1st April – The Highlander Mountain Marathon
The Highlander Mountain Marathon is a new event for people with a sense of adventure and club members Paul Davies has already entered. It will follow a traditional mountain marathon format over two days, with teams of two navigating over mountainous terrain and carrying all their equipment for the overnight camp. There are 5 classes to choose from; A, B, C, D and Score. The routes have been designed to allow a wide range of participation; however none of the courses will follow paths and given the possible weather conditions at the time of year, the event is not suitable for novices. The primary aim of the event is that everyone enjoys a weekend of travelling through a wild and beautiful mountain environment. SPORTident TIMING, the premier electronic system for recording times at checkpoints, will be used to give instant and accurate results for each day. The team behind the HMM have years of experience between them as mountaineers, competitors and organisers of adventure racing events. This, combined with an intimate knowledge of the event location, means that the HMM promises to be a special event – challenging, fun, sociable (and midge free!!!)
