Sunday 31st May – Brussells 20K Road Race, Belgium
Well done to Phil Smithard to represented Carnegie Harriers at yesterday’s Brussells 20K. Phil race report can be found below;
Brussells 20k (actually 20.1k) On a very hot, humid day, the sole club rep. managed to overtake some 17,000 runners, since all first timers get to start at the back, to finish 2365th in 01:33.58 – winning time 1:00:00 dead! The race was a constant hastle trying to find the non-existant race line and I never seeemed to catch up with the folk doing my pace. A nasty rise at the 17 – 19k distance was most unwelcome, though I did manage to run the whole distance and many runners were reduced to a walk which didn’t help much either. One or two collapsed runners with breathing masks certainly made the mind concentrate. My family who are hosting me all ran very well with PBs – they ran last year, with the 15yo knocking 18 mins off his time for a 1:49 which cannot be bad. I need to worry if he does the same next year! Summary – a very crowded, hot, humid race from the back that made it hard work for the whole distance. The only way to get in the front boxes is to have a recorded time from a previous race. Next year……………. Phil
